how to decorate a transitional living room

A transitional living room is designed to marry two separate styles: traditional and contemporary. The styles vary greatly. A traditional living room, at least in the United States, is a continuation of the interior 18th and 19th century European styles. A contemporary living room strives to be modern and more neo-European, or even postmodern.

But what does this mean in simple terms?

In general, a traditional home will have wooden furniture, tons of millwork, and colors designed to be calm and soothing. A contemporary style is the exact opposite. It tends to use texture, clean lines, geometric shapes, and often a combination of stark and bold colors. Simplicity is ideal, while more traditional styles are complex.

Combining these two looks creates a transitional living room, which manages to be fun and exciting while still being comfortable and relaxing. This look can be difficult to create, but is definitely worth it, especially if you and your partner enjoy different styles but want to live together.

Transitional Living Room – What to Look For

The greatest challenge in creating a transitional living room is figuring out how to decorate it, especially with so many options available. You can’t just split the room down the middle and have one half be traditional and the other contemporary, although it is tempting to save on the headache. Luckily, there are a few options that stand out for making the most ideal and visually pleasing transitional living room possible.

Colors

transitional living room colors

Color is important because it sets the entire tone of a room. People often use blue to be calming and soothing, green or brown to give an earthy vibe to an area, and red to be vibrant and dramatic. When it comes to being transitional, some ideal color is actually a lack thereof.

You read that correctly.

Because this style marries traditional and contemporary, it avoids the pastels of the old world and the vibrancy of the new by focusing instead on deep neutrals that evoke relaxation while still being eye-catching.

Some examples would be deep, dark, chocolate browns. These are comfortable because they don’t unsettle or excite, but they also stand out against more bare options like white. Gray is another popular choice, as is taupe, some dark greens, and even deep red.

Furniture

transitional living room furniture

Furniture is also important. A clawed sofa definitely has an old world feel but isn’t modern enough for transitional rooms. Instead, you should look at choices that combine both sides of the geometric spectrum: curves and straight lines.

Some interior decorators call this matching the feminine with the masculine. It’s like marrying a strict coffee table with round footrests and sofa cushions. The idea is to have something soft with something harsh to combine the preferences of the traditional and contemporary.

There are no special pieces to buy to truly convey the transitional nature of furniture, so don’t be afraid to get creative. If you want a comfy leather couch with round arms, go for it. Just consider having straight tables and maybe some bookshelves to offset it. A popular piece is the recliner, which combines old world comfort with new world tech. It looks and feels great.

Potential Fabrics

The whole idea of contemporary design is incorporating texture, while the traditional favors plain fabrics. To compromise, use pieces that utilize leather, velvet, suede, or nubby chenille. These add patches of texture to the room and stay true to being transitional.

If you want, consider also adding texture to other elements of the room. Distressed woods, smooth metals, and exposed brick all work well to adding little dots of character to the otherwise neutral tone set by the colors of a transitional living room.

Accessories

Accessorizing is often a person’s favorite part, and one of the greatest aspects of going with a transitional living room is that there are tons of options. The sky is pretty much the limit. The key is to focus only on a couple of pieces though to avoid giving the room a cluttered appearance.

One popular element is the use of canvas photos, which display the owner’s unique personality by showcasing favored imagery. Do you like flowers? The ocean? Loved ones? A celebrity? All can be blown up on the photo to draw the eye to what’s important in your life.

Other common elements are singular flowers, such as the colorful orchid; ornate metal candlesticks; handmade cloth coasters; even unusual pieces like decorative fire extinguishers, small figurines of animals, and glassware. Just remember to only use a couple of items to truly pull off the transitional look.

What it Conveys

When someone uses the transitional style to decorate their living room, it says they are not given to extremes and enjoy their freedom. You don’t want to invest in being too traditional or contemporary. Instead, you want to be comfortable but still have elements of the modern world that remind you of what’s outside.

Some may say the transitional is the most grounded of the styles. It doesn’t live in the past or focus too much on a cold future. It’s homey in the best way, and means you enjoy having the freedom to make your own decisions.

No wonder it’s rapidly becoming a modern day favorite.

Conclusion

Decorating a transitional living room is great because there are so many opportunities. Although there are a few limitations to truly create this style, it’s up to you to decide where you want to be traditional and where you would like to be contemporary.

The freedom and power are yours. If you want a gray and white room of elephants and nubby fabrics, then it’s yours. If you want something that is dark red but filled with shiny chrome and round leather couches, then it will be yours as well.

This article has some advice to truly pull together the transitional living room in 2019, but you don’t have to follow it exactly. Remember to express yourself and see just how beautiful the room can be.

Cake decorating is one of the sugar arts that uses icing, frosting, and other edible decorative elements to make plain cakes more visually interesting. The cake itself may also be molded (during baking) and sculpted (after baking) as part of this, and may take on simple or elaborate three-dimensional shapes as part of or as its entire decoration.

Cakes may be baked and decorated for almost any occasion, whether social or simply for the baker's own pleasure; however, they are commonly decorated to mark special occasions and celebrations such as birthdays, weddings, national or religious holidays, or as a promotional good for a business.

History

Two 18th century cakes, said to depict Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst

The decoration of cakes arose in 17th-century Europe,[1] typically for special occasions as a luxury good. Wedding cakes have the longest tradition as a decorated cake, and are considered the most artistic form of cake decorating.[by whom?][citation needed]Christmas cakes began to be decorated in the 18th and 19th centuries, having evolved from Twelfth Night cakes, an earlier tradition baked and eaten on Twelfth Night, or the Feast of the Epiphany. These cakes were considerably rich, and would be decorated elaborately only by the upper classes of society due to their expense.[2][3]

During the 1840s, the advent of temperature-controlled ovens and the production of baking powder made baking cakes much easier.[4][better source needed] As temperature control technology improved, an increased emphasis on presentation and ornamentation developed.[1] Cakes began to take on decorative shapes, were adorned with additional icing formed into patterns and flowers, and food coloring was used to accent frosting or layers of cake.

Even though baking from scratch decreased during the latter part of the 20th century in the United States due to the increase in availability of ready-made cakes and cake mixes, decorated cakes have remained an important part of celebrations such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, showers and other special occasions.

Types of decoration

A cake may be decorated using small adornments or embellishments made separately and placed on top of or around the cake, or may be decorated by being covered with a form of icing or paste, either alone or in accompaniment to other decorations. Cake decorations can be made of edible material or food-safe plastics.

Fondant icing

Not to be confused with Poured fondant.
A fondant rose edible cake decoration

Fondant, also known as sugar paste or ready-roll icing, is a soft, thick paste made of sugar, water, gelatin, vegetable fat or shortening, and glycerol. Fondant is typically sold in a variety of colours when bought ready-made, is easy to handle, and provides a smooth, matte and nonstick cake cover.

Fondant must be rolled out with cornstarch to avoid it sticking to any surfaces. Once smoothed out and thin enough, fondant can be moulded into many different shapes, such as flowers or leaves, and may be cut into shapes and applied to a cake to build up decoration. Though primarily used to cover cakes, it is also used to create individual decorations to accompany cakes, consisting only of fondant with no cake inside.

As a relatively heavy form of decoration in comparison to traditional knife-spread frosting, extensive fondant application may weigh a cake down considerably, requiring a suitably sturdy cake base for support. Fondant remains soft once sculpted, unlike other forms of icing, which may harden when exposed to air.

Royal icing

Royal icing is a sweet white icing made by whipping fresh egg whites (or powdered egg whites, meringue powder) with icing sugar. Royal icing produces well-defined icing edges especially when decorating biscuits and is ideal for piping intricate writing, borders, scrollwork and lacework on cakes. It dries very hard and preserves indefinitely if stored in a cool, dry place, but is susceptible to soften and wilt in high humidity.

Marzipan

Marzipan is often used for modeling cake decorations and sometimes as a cover over cakes, although fondant is typically preferred as an outer layer.

Gum paste

A bow made from gum paste

Gum paste, also known as florist paste, is an edible, brittle material that dries quickly and can be sculpted to make cake decorations such as flowers or molded designs.[5]

Modeling chocolate

Modeling chocolate is a chocolate paste made by melting chocolate and combining it with corn syrup, glucose syrup, or golden syrup. The chocolate is formed into a variety of shapes and structures that cannot be easily accomplished with other softer edible materials such as buttercream frosting, marzipan, or fondant. Modeling chocolate can be made from white, dark, semi-sweet, or milk chocolate.

Edible ink printing

Edible ink printing is also used in decorating cakes. After breakthroughs in nontoxic inks and printing materials in the early 1990s,[6] it became possible to print images and photographs onto edible sheets for use on cakes. The process uses preprinted images printed with edible food colors, which are then applied to various confectionery products such as cookies, cakes, or pastries. Designs made with edible ink can be created with an speciality printer, which transfers an image onto a thin, edible paper, made of starches and sugars. Originally introduced as a specialty service provided by bakeries, this technology can now be used by home consumers using the specialized paper, ink and printers.

Techniques

Decorating a cake usually involves covering it with some form of icing and then using decorative sugar, candy, chocolate or icing decorations to embellish the cake. But it can also be as simple as sprinkling a fine coat of icing sugar or drizzling a glossy blanket of glaze over the top of a cake like a mirror cake style that uses a glaze of gelatin, sugar, water, and sometimes chocolate.[7] A cake turntable (or rotating tray) can be used to facilitate the process.

Icing decorations can be made by either piping icing flowers and decorative borders or by molding sugar paste, fondant, or marzipan flowers and figures. An embossing mat is a tool for cake decoration[8] that creates embossed effects on the top of cakes, cupcakes, or similar items. The user presses the mat down into cake dough or icing and the pattern embossed in the mat is transferred to the item.[8] Embossing mats are often made of silicone rubber or similar flexible polymers.[citation needed]

“Naked Cakes” are a popular trend, as of 2020. In this decorating style, fillings are used between the cake layers but the outside is left unfrosted, or sparsely frosted with much of the cake itself still visible between and through the frosted areas. Naked cakes are often decorated with icing sugar or fresh flowers on top. They are especially popular as wedding and engagement cakes.[citation needed]

It may be necessary to secure cake layers in place to prevent sliding or falling, especially for large cakes with several layers. Various forms of wooden skewers or dowels and plastic straws are commonly used for this purpose.[9]

Large and complex structures can be made by cutting shapes out of cake and piecing them together (often secured together with many non-edible reinforcements). Pre-formed baking pans make it easy to create cakes in non-traditional shapes. Though while useful for producing multiple cakes of the same general shape, they do not have the endless customizability of hand-cut building blocks. Fondant and marzipan structures can also be used to modify the overall shape of a cake.[citation needed]

As an art

Cake decorating has become a unique art form, with examples ranging from simply decorated single-layer cakes, to complex, multi-layered three-dimensional creation with extensive edible decorations.

The arts are a very wide range of human practices of creative expression, storytelling and cultural participation. They encompass multiple diverse and plural modes of thinking, doing and being, in an extremely broad range of media. Both highly dynamic and a characteristically constant feature of human life, they have developed into innovative, stylized and sometimes intricate forms. This is often achieved through sustained and deliberate study, training and/or theorizing within a particular tradition, across generations and even between civilizations. The arts are a vehicle through which human beings cultivate distinct social, cultural and individual identities, while transmitting values, impressions, judgments, ideas, visions, spiritual meanings, patterns of life and experiences across time and space.

Prominent examples of the arts include architecture, visual arts (including ceramics, drawing, filmmaking, painting, photography, and sculpting), literary arts (including fiction, drama, poetry, and prose), performing arts (including dance, music, and theatre), textiles and fashion, folk art and handicraft, oral storytelling, conceptual and installation art, criticism, and culinary arts (including cooking, chocolate making and winemaking). They can employ skill and imagination to produce objects, performances, convey insights and experiences, and construct new environments and spaces.

The arts can refer to common, popular or everyday practices as well as more sophisticated and systematic, or institutionalized ones. They can be discrete and self-contained, or combine and interweave with other art forms, such as the combination of artwork with the written word in comics. They can also develop or contribute to some particular aspect of a more complex art form, as in cinematography.

By definition, the arts themselves are open to being continually re-defined. The practice of modern art, for example, is a testament to the shifting boundaries, improvisation and experimentation, reflexive nature, and self-criticism or questioning that art and its conditions of production, reception, and possibility can undergo.

As both a means of developing capacities of attention and sensitivity, and as ends in themselves, the arts can simultaneously be a form of response to the world, and a way that our responses, and what we deem worthwhile goals or pursuits, are transformed. From prehistoric cave paintings, to ancient and contemporary forms of ritual, to modern-day films, art has served to register, embody and preserve our ever shifting relationships to each other and to the world.

Definition

Hans Rottenhammer, Allegory of the Arts (second half of the 16th century). Gemäldegalerie, Berlin.

There are several possible meanings for the definitions of the terms Art and Arts.[a] The first meaning of the word art is « way of doing ».[1] The most basic present meaning defines the arts as specific activities that produce sensitivity in humans.[2] The arts are also referred to as bringing together all creative and imaginative activities, without including science.[b][3][4] In its most basic abstract definition, art is a documented expression of a sentient being through or on an accessible medium so that anyone can view, hear or experience it. The act itself of producing an expression can also be referred to as a certain art, or as art in general. Whether this solidified expression, or the act of producing it, is "good" or has value depends on those who access and rate it. Such public rating is dependent on various subjective factors. Merriam-Webster defines "the arts" as "painting, sculpture, music, theatre, literature, etc., considered as a group of activities done by people with skill and imagination."[5] Similarly, the United States Congress, in the National Foundation on the Arts and Humanities Act, defined "the arts" as follows:

The term "the arts" includes, but is not limited to, music (instrumental and vocal), dance, drama, folk art, creative writing, architecture and allied fields, painting, sculpture, photography, graphic and craft arts, industrial design, costume and fashion design, motion pictures, television, radio, film, video, tape and sound recording, the arts related to the presentation, performance, execution, and exhibition of such major art forms, all those traditional arts practiced by the diverse peoples of this country. (sic) and the study and application of the arts to the human environment.[6]

Art is a global activity in which a large number of disciplines are included, such as: fine arts, liberal arts, visual arts, decorative arts, applied arts, design, crafts, performing arts,[3] ... We are talking about "the arts" when several of them are mentioned: "As in all arts the enjoyment increases with the knowledge of the art".[7]

The arts can be divided into several areas, the fine arts which bring together, in the broad sense, all the arts whose aim is to produce true aesthetic pleasure,[8] decorative arts and applied arts which relate to an aesthetic side in everyday life.[9]

History

Main articles: History of art, History of music, and History of literature
The Venus of Brassempouy

The earliest surviving form of any of the arts are cave paintings, possibly from 70,000 BCE, but definitely from at least 40,000 BCE.[10] The oldest known musical instrument, the purported Divje Babe Flute—made from a young cave bear femur—is dated to 43,000 and 82,000 BCE, but whether it is truly a musical instrument (or an object created by animals) remains extremely controversial.[11] The earliest objects whose designations as musical instruments are widely accepted are eight bone flutes from the Swabian Jura, Germany; three of these from the Geissenklösterle are dated as the oldest, c. 43,150–39,370 BP.[12] The earliest surviving literature appears much later; the Instructions of Shuruppak and Kesh temple hymn among other Sumerian cuneiform tablets, are thought to only be from 2600 BCE.[13]

In Ancient Greece, all art and craft was referred to by the same word, techne. Thus, there was no distinction among the arts. Ancient Greek art brought the veneration of the animal form and the development of equivalent skills to show musculature, poise, beauty, and anatomically correct proportions. Ancient Roman art depicted gods as idealized humans, shown with characteristic distinguishing features (e.g. Zeus' thunderbolt). In Byzantine and Gothic art of the Middle Ages, the dominance of the church insisted on the expression of biblical truths. Eastern art has generally worked in a style akin to Western medieval art, namely a concentration on surface patterning and local colour (meaning the plain colour of an object, such as basic red for a red robe, rather than the modulations of that colour brought about by light, shade and reflection). A characteristic of this style is that the local colour is often defined by an outline (a contemporary equivalent is the cartoon). This is evident in, for example, the art of India, Tibet and Japan. Religious Islamic art forbids iconography, and instead expresses religious ideas through calligraphy and geometrical designs.

Classifications

Lawrence Alma-Tadema's Catullus-at-Lesbia's (1865)

In the Middle Ages, the Artes Liberales (liberal arts) were taught in universities as part of the Trivium, an introductory curriculum involving grammar, rhetoric, and logic,[14] and of the Quadrivium, a curriculum involving the "mathematical arts" of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.[15] The Artes Mechanicae (consisting of vestiaria – tailoring and weaving; agricultura – agriculture; architectura – architecture and masonry; militia and venatoria – warfare, hunting, military education, and the martial arts; mercatura – trade; coquinaria – cooking; and metallaria – blacksmithing and metallurgy)[16][not specific enough to verify] were practised and developed in guild environments. The modern distinction between "artistic" and "non-artistic" skills did not develop until the Renaissance. In modern academia, the arts are usually grouped with or as a subset of the humanities. Some subjects in the humanities are history, linguistics, literature, theology, philosophy, and logic.

The arts have also been classified as seven: painting, architecture, sculpture, literature, music, performing and cinema. Some view literature, painting, sculpture, and music as the main four arts, of which the others are derivative; drama is literature with acting, dance is music expressed through motion, and song is music with literature and voice.[17]Film is sometimes called the "eighth" and comics the "ninth art".[18]

Architecture

Main article: Architecture
The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis, Athens, Greece

Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings and structures. The word architecture comes from the Greek arkhitekton, "master builder, director of works," from αρχι- (arkhi) "chief" τεκτων (tekton) "builder, carpenter".[19] A wider definition would include the design of the built environment, from the macrolevel of town planning, urban design, and landscape architecture to the microlevel of creating furniture. Architectural design usually must address both feasibility and cost for the builder, as well as function and aesthetics for the user.

Table of architecture, Cyclopaedia, 1728

In modern usage, architecture is the art and discipline of creating, or inferring an implied or apparent plan of, a complex object or system. The term can be used to connote the implied architecture of abstract things such as music or mathematics, the apparent architecture of natural things, such as geological formations or the structure of biological cells, or explicitly planned architectures of human-made things such as software, computers, enterprises, and databases, in addition to buildings. In every usage, an architecture may be seen as a subjective mapping from a human perspective (that of the user in the case of abstract or physical artifacts) to the elements or components of some kind of structure or system, which preserves the relationships among the elements or components. Planned architecture manipulates space, volume, texture, light, shadow, or abstract elements in order to achieve pleasing aesthetics. This distinguishes it from applied science or engineering, which usually concentrate more on the functional and feasibility aspects of the design of constructions or structures.

In the field of building architecture, the skills demanded of an architect range from the more complex, such as for a hospital or a stadium, to the apparently simpler, such as planning residential houses. Many architectural works may be seen also as cultural and political symbols, or works of art. The role of the architect, though changing, has been central to the successful (and sometimes less than successful) design and implementation of pleasingly built environments in which people live.

Ceramics

Main article: Ceramic art

Ceramic art is art made from ceramic materials (including clay), which may take forms such as pottery, tile, figurines, sculpture, and tableware. While some ceramic products are considered fine art, some are considered to be decorative, industrial, or applied art objects. Ceramics may also be considered artefacts in archaeology. Ceramic art can be made by one person or by a group of people. In a pottery or ceramic factory, a group of people design, manufacture, and decorate the pottery. Products from a pottery are sometimes referred to as "art pottery." In a one-person pottery studio, ceramists or potters produce studio pottery. In modern ceramic engineering usage, "ceramics" is the art and science of making objects from inorganic, non-metallic materials by the action of heat. It excludes glass and mosaic made from glass tesserae.

Conceptual art

Main article: Conceptual art

Conceptual art is art wherein the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. The inception of the term in the 1960s referred to a strict and focused practice of idea-based art that often defied traditional visual criteria associated with the visual arts in its presentation as text.[20] Through its association with the Young British Artists and the Turner Prize during the 1990s,[21] its popular usage, particularly in the United Kingdom, developed as a synonym for all contemporary art that does not practise the traditional skills of painting and sculpture.

Drawing

Main article: Drawing

Drawing is a means of making an image, using any of a wide variety of tools and techniques. It generally involves making marks on a surface by applying pressure from a tool, or moving a tool across a surface. Common tools are graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax colour pencils, crayons, charcoals, pastels, and markers. Digital tools which can simulate the effects of these are also used. The main techniques used in drawing are line drawing, hatching, crosshatching, random hatching, scribbling, stippling, and blending. An artist who excels in drawing is referred to as a drafter, draftswoman, or draughtsman.[22] Drawing can be used to create art used in cultural industries such as illustrations, comics and animation. Comics are often called the "ninth art" (le neuvième art) in Francophone scholarship, adding to the traditional "Seven Arts".[23]

Painting

Main article: Painting
The Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci

Painting is a mode of creative expression, and can be done in numerous forms. Drawing, gesture (as in gestural painting), composition, narration (as in narrative art), or abstraction (as in abstract art), among other aesthetic modes, may serve to manifest the expressive and conceptual intention of the practitioner.[24] Paintings can be naturalistic and representational (as in a still life or landscape painting), photographic, abstract, narrative, symbolistic (as in Symbolist art), emotive (as in Expressionism), or political in nature (as in Artivism).

Modern painters have extended the practice considerably to include, for example, collage. Collage is not painting in the strict sense since it includes other materials. Some modern painters incorporate different materials such as sand, cement, straw, wood or strands of hair for their artwork texture. Examples of this are the works of Elito Circa, Jean Dubuffet or Anselm Kiefer.

Photography

Main article: Fine art photography

Photography as an art form refers to photographs that are created in accordance with the creative vision of the photographer. Art photography stands in contrast to photojournalism, which provides a visual account for news events, and commercial photography, the primary focus of which is to advertise products or services.

Sculpture

Main article: Sculpture

Sculpture is the branch of the visual arts that operates in three dimensions. It is one of the plastic arts. Durable sculptural processes originally used carving (the removal of material) and modelling (the addition of material, as clay), in stone, metal, ceramics, wood and other materials; but since modernism, shifts in sculptural process led to an almost complete freedom of materials and process. A wide variety of materials may be worked by removal such as carving, assembled by welding or modelling, or moulded, or cast.

Literature is literally "acquaintance with letters" as in the first sense given in the Oxford English Dictionary. The noun "literature" comes from the Latin word littera meaning "an individual written character (letter)." The term has generally come to identify a collection of writings, which in Western culture are mainly prose (both fiction and non-fiction), drama and poetry. In much, if not all of the world, the artistic linguistic expression can be oral as well, and include such genres as epic, legend, myth, ballad, other forms of oral poetry, and as folktale. Comics, the combination of drawings or other visual arts with narrating literature, are often called the "ninth art" (le neuvième art) in Francophone scholarship.[23]

Performing arts

Main article: Performing arts

Performing arts comprise dance, music, theatre, opera, mime, and other art forms in which a human performance is the principal product. Performing arts are distinguished by this performance element in contrast with disciplines such as visual and literary arts where the product is an object that does not require a performance to be observed and experienced. Each discipline in the performing arts is temporal in nature, meaning the product is performed over a period of time. Products are broadly categorized as being either repeatable (for example, by script or score) or improvised for each performance.[25] Artists who participate in these arts in front of an audience are called performers, including actors, magicians, comedians, dancers, musicians, and singers. Performing arts are also supported by the services of other artists or essential workers, such as songwriting and stagecraft. Performers often adapt their appearance with tools such as costume and stage makeup.

Dance

Main article: Dance
A ballroom dance exhibition

Dance (from Old French dancier, of unknown origin) generally refers to human movement either used as a form of expression or presented in a social, spiritual or performance setting.[26]Dance is also used to describe methods of non-verbal communication (see body language) between humans or animals (e.g. bee dance, mating dance), motion in inanimate objects (e.g. the leaves danced in the wind), and certain musical forms or genres. Choreography is the art of making dances, and the person who does this is called a choreographer. Definitions of what constitutes dance are dependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artistic and moral constraints and range from functional movement (such as Folk dance) to codified, virtuoso techniques such as ballet. In sports, gymnastics, figure skating and synchronized swimming are dance disciplines while Martial arts "kata" are often compared to dances.

Music

Main article: Music
A musical score by Mozart. About this soundPlay (help·info)

Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence, occurring in time. Common elements of music are pitch (which governs melody and harmony), rhythm (and its associated concepts tempo, metre, and articulation), dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music ranges from strictly organized compositions (and their reproduction in performance) through improvisational music to aleatoric pieces. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial. Within "the arts", music may be classified as a performing art, a fine art, and auditory art.

Theatre

Main article: Theatre

Theatre or theater (from Greek theatron (θέατρον); from theasthai, "behold"[27]) is the branch of the performing arts concerned with acting out stories in front of an audience using combinations of speech, gesture, music, dance, sound and spectacle – indeed, any one or more elements of the other performing arts. In addition to the standard narrative dialogue style, theatre takes such forms as opera, ballet, mime, kabuki, classical Indian dance, Chinese opera and mummers' plays.

Multidisciplinary artistic works

Areas exist in which artistic works incorporate multiple artistic fields, such as film, opera and performance art. While opera is often categorized in the performing arts of music, the word itself is Italian for "works", because opera combines several artistic disciplines in a singular artistic experience. In a typical traditional opera, the entire work utilizes the following: the sets (visual arts), costumes (fashion), acting (dramatic performing arts), the libretto, or the words/story (literature), and singers and an orchestra (music).

Ernestine Schumann-Heink as Waltraute

The composer Richard Wagner recognized the fusion of so many disciplines into a single work of opera, exemplified by his cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen ("The Ring of the Nibelung"). He did not use the term opera for his works, but instead Gesamtkunstwerk ("synthesis of the arts"), sometimes referred to as "Music Drama" in English, emphasizing the literary and theatrical components which were as important as the music. Classical ballet is another form which emerged in the 17th century in which orchestral music is combined with dance.

Other works in the late 19th, 20th and 21st centuries have fused other disciplines in unique and creative ways, such as performance art. Performance art is a performance over time which combines any number of instruments, objects, and art within a predefined or less well-defined structure, some of which can be improvised. Performance art may be scripted, unscripted, random or carefully organized; even audience participation may occur. John Cage is regarded by many as a performance artist rather than a composer, although he preferred the latter term. He did not compose for traditional ensembles. Cage's composition Living Room Music composed in 1940 is a "quartet" for unspecified instruments, really non-melodic objects, which can be found in a living room of a typical house, hence the title.

Other arts

There is no clear line between art and culture. Cultural fields like gastronomy are sometimes considered as arts.[28]

Applied arts

Main article: Applied arts

The applied arts are the application of design and decoration to everyday, functional, objects to make them aesthetically pleasing.[29] The applied arts includes fields such as industrial design, illustration, and commercial art.[30] The term "applied art" is used in distinction to the fine arts, where the latter is defined as arts that aims to produce objects which are beautiful or provide intellectual stimulation but have no primary everyday function. In practice, the two often overlap.

Video games

See also: Video games as an art form

A debate exists in the fine arts and video game cultures over whether video games can be counted as an art form.[31] Game designer Hideo Kojima professes that video games are a type of service, not an art form, because they are meant to entertain and attempt to entertain as many people as possible, rather than being a single artistic voice (despite Kojima himself being considered a gaming auteur, and the mixed opinions his games typically receive). However, he acknowledged that since video games are made up of artistic elements (for example, the visuals), game designers could be considered museum curators – not creating artistic pieces, but arranging them in a way that displays their artistry and sells tickets.

Within social sciences, cultural economists show how video games playing is conducive to the involvement in more traditional art forms and cultural practices, which suggests the complementarity between video games and the arts.[32]

In May 2011, the National Endowment of the Arts included video games in its redefinition of what is considered a "work of art" when applying for a grant.[33] In 2012, the Smithsonian American Art Museum presented an exhibit, The Art of the Video Game.[34] Reviews of the exhibit were mixed, including questioning whether video games belong in an art museum.

If sleek lines, geometric shapes, and minimal clutter is what you crave, then Mid-Century Modern style is your interior design match.

This throwback style embraces mixed materials - like wood, plastic, and metal - and low-profile furniture with tapered legs to create a look that is trendy, yet timeless.

A Mid-Century color palette is flexible, so you can keep it simple with neutral colors or add pops of pumpkin orange, avocado green, or mustard yellow to enhance the retro vibe

The clean, cool lines of modern architecture was a direct rebuttal to the neoclassical styles that came before. Rooms flowed into one another and often included floor-to-ceiling glass walls to open the house to the natural world. "The new structures placed emphasis on efficiency and function, as well as informality and comfort," says author Lisa Skolnik. Inside, bold, spare furnishings like low-slung sofas and ovoid glass coffee tables were arranged with minimum clutter and often featured built-in furniture to keep the space open and airy. Clocks, lamps, and glassware took on asymmetrical and free-form shapes; most popularly, kidneys, amoebas, and boomerangs. That lime-green Egg chair of grandma's - which you thought hideous as a child - would now be snapped up in a second by a savvy collector.

Last weekend, one of my former students and I held a marathon crafting night to get her all set up for college.  Together, we had collected many ideas...mostly from Pinterest.  After about 6 hours of cutting, gluing, painting and mod podging plus some enchiladas and brownies, we ended up with all of these awesome pieces:

All pieces.jpg

She bought a light gray duvet cover from Ikea and chose these bright colors for accents.

headboard.jpg

This is an upholstered headboard for a twin bed that we made out of FOAMCORE, 1" foam that we doubled and batting.  We covered some buttons in a light cream and tufted the headboard.  This will work perfectly for her dorm room since she can't put any holes into the walls.  We just looped some ribbon on the back to make a hook to hang from command strips!

Lamp.jpg

Amber also bought one of these .00 lamps from Wal-Mart.  We just took some extra fabric from the headboard and made some little rosettes with ribbon accents.

Door Decor.jpg

For some quick door decor, we mod podged this letter A with some scrapbook and tied a ribbon loop.

Ladder.jpg
Ladder2.jpg

I got this bunk bed ladder at a garage sale for .00.  We sprayed it with spray paint and used the belt sander to rough it up a little.  Since she won't have a lot of floor space in her room, she plans to use this ladder to take advantage of some vertical space.  She will hang her purses, hats, scarves, throw blankets, etc on this ladder.

Pinterest1.jpg

Source

Inspired by this picture on Pinterest, we decided to make some cheap art with the toilet paper rolls I have been saving for the last few months.
Art.jpg
art2.jpg

Literally, we sprayed some flat canvases with spray paint or used some acrylic paints for a base color and glued contrasting painted toilet paper roll clippings to the canvas.  The designs are limitless!!  I love the girly flowers she went with.  That blue color with white flowers really made me want one of my own!  Hanging on a wall, it truly looks elegant.

It was a great night of collaborating with ideas and techniques.  I can't wait for her to get to college, set up and send me some pictures of everything together!

And wouldn't a slipcover for under .99 from UglySofa.com look great over a beat up couch in a dorm room!  My Uncommon Slice of Suburbia is hosting a KILLER giveaway!  Check it out here!

Hello there!  I thought I'd drop in and show you some of my Halloween decorations for this year.  It's all very simple compared to what I normally do, because the house is still on the market and could be shown at any given time!

I don't do minimal very well, but here's my attempt! Lol!

This old gas can turned Jack-O-Lantern is a recent find at the Texas State Fair.  Isn't he the cutest?  The minute I spotted him, I had to have him!  He's hanging out at the back door to make me smile when I arrive home each day.

Here's this year's mantle area.  I use the same decor that I have collected each year, but sometimes I get new pieces to add to my collection.  This year I added this pack of Halloween goodies and this little Halloween tree too.

This stack of candy buckets is really special to me, well two of them are anyway.  The top two are my son's when they were little.  The bottom one was an off season Goodwill find for !  I placed these candles in them to light them up each night.

Spooky Table?  Not too spooky, just a little bit maybe?  I'm not really in to the blood and gore, but a little creepy is ok at my house.

I recently got these cutie place mats from Cerile Handmade and I used them on my Halloween table, but I can use them any time of year really.  You get to choose what color and what words you want on your place mats.  If you order some, tell them TexasBlueBungalow sent you!

Who wants a piece of Scary Cake with Scream filling?  Ok good, I'll put the coffee on too!

It doesn't have to be done all at once.  It is a slow process in the works! C-ya next time!

If you're looking to add some spook to your home in the month of October but don't have a lot of time, motivation, or money to decorate the whole house, then I highly suggest focusing just on your entryway. Aside from your front door, typically it's the one space that will greet your trick-or-treaters. And you can bet their mamas are secretly eyeing it for inspiration! So today, I wanted to swing on by  to share my black and white Halloween entry table decor.
Halloween entry table decor

My foyer table is as fickle as a sixteen year old girl when it comes to picking out her attire. Last week she was decked out in her fall best and today she's donning her Halloween ensemble. Yes, she changes quite frequently, but she's one of my favorite spaces in the house to decorate for any holiday.

Halloween entry ideas

I'm not an over-the-top decorator when it comes to Halloween. 98% of our spooky decor happens right here in the entryway.  Last year, I went with a vintage-medical-inspired theme, this year I was in a rush to get things up during nap time, so I just gathered together things that I thought would look good. I guess you can say there's a black and white theme.
Halloween decor ideas
The best part was using items I already had. As you can see,

I incorporated a lot of the same items from last year's vignette. The darling Trick-or-Treat block is from Blocks, Paper, Paint, the skeleton hands and faux white pumpkins were from Michaels, and the big spiders are Dollar Store finds. The black candelabra and lace runner, I purchased

years ago but Amazon sells a similar candelabra and runner. Flashcards were all vintage market finds and the little haunted house, well, my memory is no longer serving me well and I can't remember where I found it!
Halloween foyer decorations
The second best part was that my hubby actually added his own touches to this display! He's the one who thought of placing the bottom flashcard in the skeleton fingers and the crow on the candelabra. Isn't that so incredibly creative of him (just nod your head yes)? No really, I honestly liked what he did so I didn't change them a bit!

One of the biggest ways to save money when decorating for the holidays is to shop your home for items that will coordinate but are not necessarily your typical looking holiday decor. For example, the wreath (which is a find from Aldi, out of all places!), it's not a Halloween wreath but when I got a glimpse of it sitting in our dining room, I realized the color would work great for our ghoulish display! Hope you enjoyed the quick, mini tour of our Halloween entryway!

Do you decorate for October 31st?  Do you go big or go small?

THREE Birds Reggae Birthday Party - Silver Spoon and Paper ...

17-01-2022 · For decor, I just wanted to do something clean, simple, and laid back using old school party tactics. Balloons and streamers, home made food, home made cake, and good music. Red, Yellow, and Green balloons provided our pops of color and I created a backdrop of streamers alternating in the reggae colors for the dessert and drinks display.

17-01-2022

I didn't throw Marisa a birthday party last year, so I was agonizing over what her birthday party theme would be this year. Toy Story? Princess? I just couldn't decide. So I asked Marisa what she wanted for her birthday and she said, "cake," "balloons," and "the thing that makes the sound when you go [makes blowing sounds]." That wasn't really much help on theme, but I took note. Then suddenly Marisa started singing "Three Birds," by Bob Marley. (Marisa has been listening to reggae since she was in the womb, so she can pick out a reggae beat on the radio and instantly yells out "It's BOB MARLEY!" ;) She makes us proud. hehe.) Anyway, I heard "three birds" and a light bulb went on since it would be Marisa's third birthday.

The great thing about this theme is that you can find the reggae colors, (red, gold, and green) just about anywhere, it's great for tropical backyards that have seen one too many Hawaiian themed luaus, and the colors and the music are great for boys and girls, men and women - it's universally pleasing. I had a TON of ideas for this I didn't get to execute and will share later, but for now here's what did go down...

First, the invitation. The invitation is always the starting point for me. In my head, I initially thought of drawing up three little birds and hanging cutesy birds and pom poms and stars everywhere...but as I started designing, I was inspired by a picture of Marisa on the beach and decided I wanted to go with more of a relaxed Island-of-Jamaica-vibe that featured the reggae colors. I decided to change up the wording to the song to create text for the invitation, and added a special die cut to the design to make the invitation a little more special. (*Note: This would also make a great ONE LOVE first birthday party invite!)

For decor, I just wanted to do something clean, simple, and laid back using old school party tactics. Balloons and streamers, home made food, home made cake, and good music. Red, Yellow, and Green balloons provided our pops of color and I created a backdrop of streamers alternating in the reggae colors for the dessert and drinks display. I also added some old reggae records and a few souvenirs we had picked up in Jamaica years before. We used grass table skirts to line the fence around the yard for an island feeling and went with crisp white tablecloths and wood chairs. Reggae music playing in the background set the mood. Unfortunately, as I was also the hostess, I couldn't get a good picture of backdrop for the buffet table, but it was made by purchasing and hanging red, yellow, and green plastic tablecloths from Party City and then topped with coordinating streamers in a messy way to almost mimic dreads. Instead of my usual buffet cards, I went with a simple chalkboard menu just as you might see in Jamaica.

Activities centered around water play so I provided water guns for the kids, a silly water hose with 12 nozzles that sprayed water everywhere in the yard, a water table, and of course there was the pool. I also bought party horns which the kids loved, and couldn't resist setting up a "Lively Up Yourself" photobooth. It's always fun to include props in a photobooth. I included some baby sized dreads from BabyToupee.com (you must check out their other wigs in addition to "The Bob."!!), a rasta beanie, sunglasses, and a Jamaican drum. We used two Jamaican flags for the backdrop. (Unfortunately in my rush to set up as Mommy, hostess, and photographer - I didn't place it in the greatest spot, and we had a few issues with the wind blowing up the flags. This, however, provided much entertainment for all the kids!
The food. I'll let you in on a secret...I really wanted to do this party just so I could serve "Buffalo Soldier Wings!" Here is the full menu: -Buffalo Soldier Wings (ordered from Wing Stop, plus some plain chicken nuggets for the kids) -One of Jamaica's staple dishes, "rice and peas" which is coconut rice with beans - very easy to make and cost effective. I experimented with my own method and will try to post that recipe later.

-Island Pork Tenderloin - everyone RAVED about this and it's also ideal for making for a crowd. Get the recipe HERE.

-Reggae Froots (a play on reggae roots) which were mini bamboo skewers of strawberry, pineapple, and kiwi chunks -Rasta Pasta - tri colored pasta mixed with a bag of iceberg salad, cherry tomatoes, and pepperoncinis (*I left these out so the kids could eat it.) Serve with Italian or Ranch dressing. -Rasta Pops - I used juices this time, but next time would make my own purees to add to the juice for brighter colors.

-Rasta Cake - I was inspired by a rainbow cake tutorial and made a three layer cake using white cake mix and dyed each layer to create the rasta colors.

And of course, we had to have some Red Stripe Jamaican beer on hand!
As a favor, I went old school again and made a CD for all of our guests. It was Sebastian, the crab from the Little Mermaid, singing reggae songs. It uncluded his rendition of "Three Birds" as well as "Under the Sea."

The party was a blast. Thank you to all of our guests for celebrating our special three year old. :) Stay tuned for more food/drink ideas for this theme! All stationery, photography, event design and styling by Jackie Culmer Photography and Design.

Inking Idaho: All About Tiered Trays At Felt Creative Home ...

17-01-2022 · This tray is two tiered, is 17-1/2" tall. The bottom tray is 15" and the top tray is 11". This is a newer item, the Galvanized Two Tiered Tray. This also comes in a one tier and a three tier. I'll let you catch the measurements through the links on this one since there are three different sizes. This is a fairly new one as well and super versatile.

17-01-2022

I'm doing a post today all about tiered trays.

Every time I post photos of my tray, I get questions about it.  I post it a lot, so that's a lot of answering. 😍  I mean, I love them and could talk tier tray all day long, but maybe doing a post will help especially as were coming up on Christmas buying season.

I buy mine from Felt Creative Home Goods on Amazon.  My friend Britney owns this store and she just added a few new items I'm going to share here as well.  I love supporting my friends and small businesses, as you know if you've been here for a while.

Felt+Creative+Tier+Tray+Round.jpeg

Rustic Two Tiered Tray

This is the tray I have. I have it in this brown, which is brown with a lot of gray tones, and I have one in white.  It comes in black too and they all come with three heavy metal toppers, so you can change them out as you want.

The trays come unassembled and nest inside each other.  I disassemble mine to store them, which makes storing and having multiples 😜 so nice.

This tray is two tiered, is 17-1/2" tall.  The bottom tray is 15" and the top tray is 11".

Felt+Creative+Galvanized+two+tier.jpeg

This is a newer item, the Galvanized Two Tiered Tray.

This also comes in a one tier and a three tier.

I'll let you catch the measurements through the links on this one since there are three different sizes.

Felt+Creative+Tier+Tray+Rectangle.jpeg

This is  a fairly new one as well and super versatile.  This may be my next purchase!

Three Tier Tray Serving Stand Rectangle

This can be a one tier, two tier or three tiered stand all in one.  The measurements for this one are: bottom 12' x 20', middle 10.5 x 16.5", top 8" x 13".
Felt+Creative+Stacking+Risers+Brown.jpeg

This option is brand new.  They come in white, this brown and black and are a fun twist on the tiered tray.  These are just risers, you can place them in any position you want, stack them in two or three.  Click over to there store to see how this one can be styled.

Farmhouse Tiered Tray Risers

Largest riser is 12" x 16", middle is 9" x 12" and the top is 6" x 8".

Felt+Creative+Chicken+Wire+Chest.jpeg
These are brand new as well and fit right in with the whole farmhouse and  tiered tray decor.

This comes in white, gray, brown and black.

Felt+Creative+Mini+Square+letterboards.jpeg
Size 6" x 6". These come with a black and a white letter set and cursive months and days of the week.
I use these in my tier tray all the time!

Felt+Creative+Rectangle+Letterboard.jpeg
Same thing, set of 3 but in rectangles!

Mini Felt Letterboards
Size  4" x 10". These come with a black and a white letter set and cursive months and days of the week.
Felt+Creative+My+Letterboard.jpeg

This is the one in my kitchen, I use this all the time and have made paper flower corsages to dress it up as well as little banners to string across it.

This is the 12 x 16band is currently unavailable - sorry!  The 10 x 10 is available and comes in many colors...like lots of colors which is so cool!

Rustic Felt Letterboard

I hope that helps answer some of the questions about the products I use and the links to find them.  I love that you enjoy seeing them enough to ask and I hope you are enjoying having them on your home.

Engineer’s Decor Mod 1.18.1, 1.17.1 adds cosmetic blocks for the engineer’s workshop, factory, and home. The mod has its focus on non-functional, decorative blocks. If anyhow possible, no tile entities or user interactions are used.

Engineer_s Decor mod for minecraft logo

Features:

  • Clinker bricks: Slightly darker and more colorful version of the vanilla brick block. Eight position-dependent texture variations are implemented to make the wall look more “alive”. Crafted 3×3 with a brick block in the center and any combination of bricks and nether bricks around (actually, anything where the ore dictionary says it’s a “brick ingot”). Higher explosion resistance than the vanilla brick wall. Also available as stairs, crafted as usual. There is a reverse recipe to get three clinker brick blocks back from four stairs.
  • Rebar (steel) reinforced concrete: Expensive but creeper-proof. Crafted 3×3 from four concrete blocks and five steel rods. Texture design oriented at the IE concrete, slightly darker, eight (position dependent) random texture variations with rust traces. Also as stairs with the usual stairs recipe.
  • Concrete wall and rebar concrete wall: Solid barrier design walls (not like vanilla walls). Crafted 3×3 with six blocks (the usual wall-recipe).
  • Slag bricks: Gray-brownish brick, also eight texture variations. Crafted 3×3 from slag in the center and any kind of bricks (“brick ingot”) around. Has a higher explosion resistance than the vanilla brick wall. Also available stairs, also with the reverse recipe.
  • Treated wood ladder: Crafted 3×3 with the known ladder pattern, items are treated wood sticks.
  • Metal rung ladder: Industrial wall-fixed ladder with horizontal bent rods. Crafted 3×3 with five iron or steel rods in a “U” pattern.
  • Staggered metal steps: Industrial wall-fixed sparse ladder with steps in a zip pattern. Crafted 3×3 with six iron or steel rods in a zip pattern.
  • Treated wood table: Four leg table made out of treated wood. Crafted 3×3 with three treated wood slabs and four treated wood poles. Guess the pattern.
  • Treated wood pole: Pole fragment that can be placed in all directions. It does intentionally not connect to posts, fences, etc – just a straight pole. Can be used e.g. for structural support or wire relay post, where the height of the IE wire posts does not match.
  • More to come slowly but steadily.

HARRY+POTTER+ROOM+IDEAS.jpg

I can't believe it's been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was published. I actually watched the movie first when it came out on TV.

I decided to see what all the fuss was about since there was a lot of love/hate talk in the Christian community. Well, I thought the movie was fine, so I figured maybe the book was bad or something. I went to the library to find out for myself. I became hooked. :) The books and movies aren't perfect, but I fell in love with the story and the boy who lived.

My kids were toddler and baby age at the time. So, Harry Potter has just been a part of their childhood. My firstborn read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone when he was 6 years old. I've read a couple aloud to my kids, and we've watched all the movies together, minus a couple of scenes or so. Anyway, from toys to games to costumes to birthday parties, my kids have done it all!

I love how Pottery Barn is celebrating 20 years with all of their AMAZING Harry Potter decor and room ideas. The whimsy in me is imagining receiving a mystery inheritance so I can buy a cabin in the woods and design it as a Harry Potter haven. I could rent it out to all the Harry Potter lovers out there. How fun would that be?! Well, I probably won't be getting that cabin anytime soon, so I'll just enjoy looking and dreaming for now. If you or your loved ones are fans, consider making their dream room come true with these classy room ideas for boys and girls. The Common Room and Pride Lounge would be great for lofts or basements, I think. Christmas is just around the corner, too. :)

Just click the photos to view each room. Happy Shopping!

To come up with your Stencil simply:

- Find a picture of your favorite character.

- Using a ruler draw 1 inch by 1 inch grid on your picture.

- Look at each square and draw only what you see in that square on a blank sheet of copy paper.

- Once you have done this for all the squares, tape your pages together, and cut the outside edge.

- Now that the excess paper is off your picture, you now have a stencil!

How to make your decoration simply:

- Lay down a sheet of plywood, and trace your picture.

IMG_3463.JPG

- Take a skill saw and cut on your lines. Being careful to cut on the line. When the saw is cutting in one direction, you will notice it doesn't turn in the other direction easily. Just stop the saw, pull the blade out of the wood and start sawing in the other direction to obtain the  desired cut.

- Once your object is cutout, sand the edges with an electric sander. If you don't have an electric sander you can use a handheld manual sander. Dust off your cut out once you are done sanding.

- With a pencil draw in your pictures inside lines. This will show you the paint lines.

- Once your lines are drawn, my favorite part begins ... painting! Use craft paint (the paint found in little tubes at your local craft store). I recommend 3 coats of paint.

IMG_3480.JPG

- For the outside edges, and details use puffy paint. (Again found in small tubes at your local craft store).

- Once paint is dried, attach backing. This will keep decoration standing up. Attach a strip of plywood 4" by (your desired length from your board to the ground). Just use a tape measure to obtain your desired length.

- If you live in a windy climate, you can drill a small hole at the bottom of both sides, and attach to a tent steak in the ground.

It's that easy! Now I am off to make more Peanuts characters. Stay tuned I will post others and I complete them.

Happy Painting!!

A Nurse And A Nerd: Decorating Above the Cabinets

17-01-2022 · So as great as it is having space to decorate above my kitchen cabinets... I have space above my cabinets that I have to decorate. ... in March, 2020. Their treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for ...

17-01-2022
Hi there friends. So last week I told you we had dug some Adirondack chairs out of my mother-in-law's garage.  Well there were some other gems that we found under all that dust.
DSC_0926.JPG

Check out these blue green mason jars!  As soon as I saw them, I knew what I was going to do with them! I thought they would be perfectly suited for the nook above my cabinets!  Lets talk about that little nook, shall we?  I think it can be a bit tricky to decorate...
DSC_1136e.jpg
So as great as it is having space to decorate above my kitchen cabinets... I have space above my cabinets that I have to decorate.  Meaning, what the heck am I going to put up there!? It was easy when we moved in, it was Christmas time!
DSC_2147.JPG
Boom. Christmas Garland. Done. Easy. And then, after Christmas was over, I moved these little copper guys up there.
DSC_0375.JPG
Would you ever guess that those things are Copper Snowflake Christmas Tree Toppers? Well they are!  (And they are actually still for sale here if you are interested.) For a while they were hanging out on either side of our dining room window.  Remember?
DSC_2181.JPG
(Whoah! Look how bare the dining room looks!)

So then after Christmas, they found their way above the cabinets. And then I turned around and it was the end of May already, and they were still up there!  I know you might not guess that they are a Christmas ornaments, necessarily, but I knew that they were and it just bothered me.  I mean, I'm as excited for Christmas as the next person (possibly more excited), but it's important to enjoy each season as it comes, don'cha think?

So when I got these pretty blue-green mason jars, I knew just where they were headed. Up top!
DSC_1127.JPG
Yes, I felt that I should give summer it's own time above the cabinets.
DSC_1222.JPG
Mason jars sure do say summer, don't they?
DSC_1136.JPG

And I love the way the light shines through them.

DSC_1225.JPGDSC_1138.JPG
Wanna know a secret? I needed to prop the jars on top of something so that you would see them above the crown molding of the cabinets.   Guess what I used?
DSC_1140.JPG
You better believe it.  Putting those old nursing school textbooks to good use! Notice they are not engineering textbooks. hm.... I'm sure that doesn't mean anything. What's that you say? More pictures of the kitchen? OK, sure....

Summer 14.jpg
And I'm celebrating because I haven't killed off my basil plant....yet!
DSC_1217.JPG
DSC_1127.JPGI think there are lots of other possibilities for above the cabinet decorating. Here are a few ideas I've been thinking about:
  • I love the idea of anything glass because it allows the light to shine through - glass plates or platters would be gorgeous.  Or maybe a collection of varying sizes and shades of antique vases or pitchers.
  • A loose weave basket would bring in some nice texture- might be a good option for those who don't have lights above your cabinets.
  • Or maybe something with a nice shine to it - copper tea kettles would be adorable.
  • Any type of garland, of course.  And its super easy to switch out seasonally.
  • If you're not a garland girl, during Christmas time, you could have a glass bowl full of antique glass ornaments, or -like me- pretty tree toppers (and supposedly you can keep them up there until May, which is nice.)
  • For fall you could get some varying sizes of pretty artificial pumpkins (Hobby Lobby usually has a ton of different kinds), or find some bittersweet and arrange them using floral Styrofoam to keep them in place.
  • Or maybe you would leave it bare for a completely open and simple look - I really like the simple and uncluttered look. Unfortunately, for my particular space (since my kitchen is black and white) it needs some color/texture/shine to keep things interesting.

What are your ideas for above the cabinet decorating?  Don't you just love pretty additions that take minimal effort and time? What summer decorating have you been doing? P.S. I hope today finds you well and enjoying your dads/grandpas/husbands/dad figures.  Dad's are great! And I don't think they get enough credit for the work they do and the impact they have on the world.  So thanks to you dads! Keep providing, fixing, hugging, loving, and leading.  We need you and we appreciate you!
Peonies.jpg

Happy Father's Day!

P.S.S. if you are wondering what color the Adirondack chairs are going to be, you'll have to wait until I finish them! Sorry! Gotta keep the suspense alive until the full reveal!

Don't miss a beat.
