Our expertise

We have extensively tested a range of solar lights in urban, suburban, and rural gardens across the country. These lights have been exposed to various lighting and weather conditions for months, including wind, rain, hail, sleet, cold snaps, heat waves, and even dust from the Sahara. Each light was carefully evaluated and assigned scores. The models that performed exceptionally well were awarded the prestigious BBC Gardeners’ World Magazine Best Buy designation. Our reviews provide detailed lists of pros and cons for clarity and each light has been rated based on setup, features, performance, and value for money. Only the standout solar lights have made it onto our list, so you can purchase with confidence.

Type

Outdoor solar lights can be categorized into three types based on their light output: motion-activated, dusk-to-dawn, and timer-controlled. The size of the solar cell and battery capacity determine the availability of solar energy, so it is important to consider when and how long you want the lights to shine. Timer-controlled solar lights offer the most control as you can set a specific time for them to turn on and determine the duration of illumination.

Dusk-to-dawn solar lights use sensors to automatically turn on when daylight fades and remain on until sunrise. In regions with limited sunlight, especially during winter, these lights may struggle to store enough solar energy for extended nighttime brightness.

Motion-activated lights are triggered by movement and conserve solar energy. The AloftSun Motion Sensor Solar Landscape Spotlights, our top choice for overall performance, offer bright lighting, three modes, and two installation methods. This style of light is often used as floodlights or for specific lighting needs, such as by the back door.

Our best smart pick, the Ring Smart Lighting Solar Floodlight, combines the benefits of a smart home device with the ability to set lighting schedules, adjust brightness, and control motion detection settings, all through a convenient app.

Things to consider when shopping for the best solar landscape lights

There are several factors to consider when choosing the best solar landscaping lights. The size and shape of your yard, as well as how you intend to use the lights, will influence your decision.

Type

Outdoor solar lights come in various types. Pathway lights are typically sold in sets of six or eight to illuminate walkways. These lights are mounted on spikes that you can push into the ground.

String lights are ideal for lighting outdoor living and dining areas. You can suspend them between trees or poles, or weave them through a pergola.

Floodlights provide task and security lighting for driveways. They can be easily mounted to the eaves of the home or garage using a simple installation kit.

Spotlights are another popular option for outdoor lighting and are commonly used to highlight architectural features of a home or landscaping elements such as trees, fountains, or statues. Similar to pathway lights, spotlights are placed on stakes that are driven into the ground.

Color and brightness

Consider the color of the light. Light color is measured in kelvins, with temperatures below 3000K considered warm and emitting a yellowish glow. Lights with a color temperature of 4000K or higher are considered cool or bright white, providing a bluish cast. Bright white lights may seem brighter, while warm lights offer a more ambient and mood-setting glow.

Although outdoor solar lights may not be as bright as wired lights, they should still provide sufficient illumination for their intended purpose. Pathway lights typically produce around 10 to 15 lumens, while spotlights should generate approximately 200 lumens. Floodlights designed for visibility and security usually produce around 800 lumens.

Battery life

Outdoor solar lights are powered by rechargeable batteries that provide varying runtimes before requiring recharging. Walkway lights generally provide around eight hours of operation, while brighter spotlights offer around six hours. Floodlights, which often use more than 100 LEDs, have shorter runtimes due to their higher lumen output. They are designed to turn on for short periods when motion is detected.

Keep in mind that solar lights require approximately six hours of direct sunlight each day to adequately recharge the batteries. It is advisable to choose solar lights with replaceable batteries since rechargeable batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a charge.

Budget

Lastly, consider your budget. While you may find options that offer two dozen lights for a low price, keep in mind that some of these lights may not function properly or may cease to work within a few weeks. Although higher cost does not always guarantee better quality, investing in more durable and higher-quality solar landscaping lights can be beneficial in the long run.

Installation

The method of installation depends on where you plan to use the solar lights. Some lights can be mounted like traditional light fixtures using screws. Solar lights with stakes are quick and easy to install for pathway lighting—simply push them into the ground. Brick lights are suitable for illuminating gardens and pathways and can be installed in pavements or dirt. Wall lights, which have a similar effect to string lights, can be mounted around the perimeter of your outdoor space. Solar-powered string lights typically come with a solar panel that needs to be positioned where it can receive an ample amount of sunlight each day. The Brightech Solar LED String Lights, our top pick for string lights, can provide ambiance to your outdoor space throughout the year.

Caring for wildlife

Solar lights are a more wildlife-friendly lighting option compared to mains-powered lights. They emit a dimmer glow, minimizing disturbance to nocturnal animals. To further minimize disturbance to bugs and bats, aim your lights towards the ground and choose dimmer and less harsh lighting options whenever possible. It is also advisable to turn off your solar lights before going to bed and ensure that some areas of your garden remain in darkness.

Solar urbane black lantern

RRP: Starting from £15.95

Our rating: 4.5/5

Solar Urbane Black Lantern - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

Solar Urbane Black Lantern

Pros:

  • Easy setup
  • Versatile - can be hung up or placed on the ground or tabletop
  • Realistic candle effect

Cons:

This attractive lantern requires no assembly except for a 48-hour charging period in the off position. It is a great choice for those without a south-facing garden since it can be placed in the sunniest spot during the day for charging and then moved to a shady corner to provide a warm glow at dusk. Despite its metal-like appearance, it is actually made of plastic, ensuring it won't rust and making it light enough to hang from trees and shrubs with thinner branches. However, this may make it less desirable for those seeking a sustainable option. In addition to hanging it up, it can also be placed on the ground or a tabletop near seating or dining areas to enjoy the realistic flickering candle effect. It is worth noting that there is no on/off switch to bypass the automatic setting, so it will stay on until late into the night.

TrueFlame USB solar crook lantern

RRP: £29.99

Our rating: 4.5/5

TrueFlame USB Solar Crook Lantern - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

TrueFlame USB Solar Crook Lantern

Pros:

  • Easy setup
  • USB connection for quick charging
  • Versatile - comes with a crook for hanging or can be placed on the ground or tabletop
  • On/off switch
  • No signs of rust or weathering

Cons:

This lantern is an excellent choice for those who prefer a traditional design. It is easy to set up, requiring only the attachment of the crook to the pole. However, it does take three days for the initial outdoor charging. Fortunately, it comes with a USB cable, allowing you to charge the light from a USB plug in just a few hours. This is convenient if you cannot wait for it to charge in sunlight or if you want to boost its charge on overcast or wintry days. Once charged, simply press the on/off switch on the lantern's base for three seconds to activate it. The lantern offers versatility with its crook, pole, and spike, allowing it to be placed in borders, lawns, or hung from trees. It also features a power-saving mode to increase performance if the battery hasn't fully charged and comes with a one-year warranty.

Dimensions: 19.5cm x 12.5cm x 67cm, 84cm height with spike

Agadir garden solar lantern

RRP: £24.99

Our rating: 4/5

Agadir Garden Solar Lantern - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

Agadir Garden Solar Lantern

Pros:

  • Striking design
  • Simple to use
  • Quick startup

Cons:

  • Slight rusting
  • Average IP rating

This eye-catching solar lantern is perfect for adding a gentle glow to doorsteps or dark corners. It looks beautiful hung among foliage and quickly turns on after dark, providing illumination even during early sunsets. It is easy to use, featuring an on/off switch that helps save power and protect wildlife. However, it was slightly outperformed by the Damasque lantern due to its non-replaceable parts and slightly dimmer light. While it creates a beautiful atmosphere, its limited brightness may restrict its practical use. Additionally, its IP44 rating could be improved, and during testing, slight rusting was observed at the corners and under the handle. Nevertheless, it comes with a reliable two-year warranty.

Mini London solar post lights

RRP: £34.99

Our rating: 4/5

Mini London Solar Post Lights - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

Mini London Solar Post Lights

Pros:

  • Easy setup
  • On/off switch
  • Power saving mode

Cons:

  • Two out of the four lights stopped working during testing
  • Comparatively expensive

These stylish stainless steel post lights are suitable for both traditional and contemporary settings. They require minimal assembly—simply twist the stakes into the base of each post, remove the protective plastic sticker from the solar panel, and push them into the ground. The lights should be charged for 48 hours in the off position before first use. They automatically turn on at dusk and feature an on/off switch and power-saving mode. The lights emit a soft glow that lasts up to 10 hours from a single daytime charge, striking a balance between illuminating a pathway and minimizing wildlife disturbance. These lights are recommended for use in south-facing gardens but may also work in southwest-facing plots and can still turn on after overcast weather. However, two out of the four lights stopped working during testing, and they come with an average one-year warranty. Considering they are sold in packs of four, they are comparatively more expensive at approximately £9 each (based on the full RRP) compared to other sets reviewed in our test, which included more lights at prices ranging from £2 to £6 per light. Each component of the light—spike, light, and solar panel—can be disassembled for compact storage. While these post lights offer a pleasing aesthetic and adequate lighting, they may not provide the best value for money.

4 Marrakesh Moroccan Solar Stake Lights - BBC Gardeners' World Magazine

4 Marrakesh Moroccan Solar Stake Lights

Pros:

  • Warm, bright light
  • Long stakes
  • Compact
  • Plastic construction prevents rust

Cons:

  • Fiddly on/off switch
  • One light stopped working during testing

These lights are perfect for adding depth to borders and flowerbeds. They emit a warm, bright light with a beautiful dappled effect thanks to their Moroccan-inspired pattern. The long stakes provide adequate clearance among most plants in a flowerbed, and their compact design ensures they do not take up too much space. As they are made of plastic, no rusting, weathering, or fading was observed. Additionally, they come with an advantageous two-year warranty. However, the on/off switch is somewhat fiddly to reach, and the instructions do not indicate its location. To access the switch, you need to remove the solar panel, which may come as a surprise if the lights do not turn on at first. Furthermore, one of the four lights stopped working during testing, underscoring the value of an extended testing period.

The Best of the Rest

Although some models didn't receive a BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Best Buy award, they still have great features worth recommending. Here are our top picks among the other outdoor solar lights we tested.

Other Outdoor Solar Lights We Tested

4 Aogist Solar Ground Lights

The 4 Aogist Solar Ground Lights are easy to assemble and provide adequate brightness. They performed well in the water and freezer tests. However, one of the spokes fell off during the golf ball test. They have a basic design and offer eight lights for under $40, making them an affordable option.

6 Pro Series VI Solar Path Light

The 6 Pro Series VI Solar Path Lights have an elegant look for lighting pathways. They still worked after the light and water test. However, their performance and design do not justify their high price tag.

Ring Solar Pathlight

The Ring Solar Pathlights provide incredibly bright light and are durable. However, they require a Ring Bridge and a smartphone app to connect to Alexa. During testing, we had difficulty getting the app to work properly, which is why we did not include them in our list of the best outdoor solar lights. If you have other Ring accessories and are willing to invest time and patience in the setup, they could be a great fit for your home.

Madison Solar Drop Bulb Lights

Our Rating: 4.8/5

Madison Solar Drop Bulb Lights BBC Gardeners World review

Madison Solar Drop Bulb Lights BBC Gardeners World review

Pros

  • Good quality with a thick, sturdy cable
  • Helpful hanging holes
  • Choice of three power-saving lighting modes
  • Two spare bulbs included

Cons

  • No replacement bulbs available

A BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Best Buy winner for the best solar lights for parties, we were immediately impressed by the quality of these large, vintage-style string lights. The string consists of 10 glass bulbs hung along a durable UK weatherproof cable and features a 3W solar panel. The lights are both attractive and user-friendly. They come carefully packaged in cardboard and can be easily assembled in about ten minutes. Simply slot the stake together and into the solar panel, and screw in the bulbs (make sure to secure them tightly to prevent them from coming loose in windy weather). The lights have a power button, allowing you to turn them off before bedtime to protect wildlife and save energy. There are also three light settings to choose from: the brightest setting, the first power-saving mode, and the dimmest power-saving mode. The solar panel is frost-resistant and large enough to power the lights even on grey winter days. The lights automatically switch on when the light starts to fade at dusk and have a runtime of up to eight hours. In our tests throughout the summer, they lasted through the night and remained lit until dawn. The lights come with two spare bulbs and a one-year warranty. The only drawback is that replacement bulbs are not available, so the lights have a limited lifespan once the bulbs start to wear out.

Dimensions: Total length of 7.25m, 45cm between each light, 3.3m from the panel to the first bulb. Each bulb hangs 19cm from the cable.

Pros:

  • High quality
  • Good features
  • Weather resistant
  • Choice of size and color

Cons:

  • Expensive
  • Tricky to clean
  • Doesn't give off a lot of light

This large and well-built lantern features a contemporary design that creates a striking focal point on patios, decks, or near front doors. It has been awarded the BBC Gardeners' World Magazine Best Buy for the best solar lantern for patios. While it emits a gentle glow that is not bright enough for eating, it adds a lovely ambiance, especially when multiple lanterns are used. Made from sturdy metal with a strong carrying handle, the lantern feels substantial and remains upright due to its weight and wide base. It features a Roman numeral sundial design around the large solar panel, and beneath it is a long bulb that offers three settings: solid, candle, or flame. These settings can be adjusted using a large switch on the side of the panel. The lantern switches on as soon as the light levels drop and remains lit for six hours before automatically turning off. The on/off switch is conveniently situated beneath the panel. The lantern is waterproof, durable, and long-lasting, but it can be challenging to clean if leaves or dust settle on or around the light. Despite its high cost, it offers good value for money, comes with a one-year warranty, and is available in two sizes (50.8 cm and 63.5 cm) and three colors: grey, forest green, or textured brown.

  • Weatherproof

Cons:

  • Ideally, you need more than one

The on/off switch is conveniently located on the back of the solar panel and offers the option of flashing or continuous light modes. When fully charged, the light has a runtime of six hours and automatically turns on at dusk. The plastic-coated prongs are weatherproof and durable, even through winter. The top solar landscape lights: Reviews & Recommendations

If you need to light up your front path or create a festive ambiance with string lights, we have found the best solar landscape lights to meet your needs.

Best overall: InnoGear Solar Lights

Innogear Solar Lights are some of the best solar landscape lights overall. Specifications

  • Color Options: Warm white, white
  • Water Resistance: IP65
  • Control: Touch
Pros
  • Easy ground or wall-mount installation
  • Low and high modes
  • Automatic on and off
  • Available in warm or bright white
Cons
  • Some units may dim prematurely
The InnoGear Solar Lights offer practical lighting with easy installation. They are available in warm or bright white to match the desired mood in your yard. These lights can be mounted on a deck or fence, or easily installed on the ground with the included stakes.

After installation, you can adjust the lighting angle up to 90 degrees and the solar panels up to 180 degrees. This adjustability allows you to highlight specific landscaping features, such as trees. The solar panels can be positioned for optimum solar energy collection.

The lights have a light sensor that automatically turns them on and off based on the available sunlight. They are also IP65 waterproof, ensuring durability in inclement weather. However, it is recommended to angle the solar panels to prevent water accumulation. While the manufacturer claims a 12-hour battery life on low mode, customer reviews suggest a shorter duration. How to Shop for Outdoor Solar Lights Like a Pro

Type

Outdoor solar lights can be classified into three main types: dusk-to-dawn lights, motion-activated lights, and timer-controlled lights. Dusk-to-dawn lights are the most common and are great for decorative purposes, as they automatically turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. However, these lights may struggle to store enough solar energy in areas with limited sunlight. Motion-activated lights are ideal for security and guidance, as they only turn on when they detect movement. Finally, timer-controlled lights give you more control over the duration of lighting.

Installation and Design

Consider where you want to direct the light before choosing outdoor solar lights. Do you need to illuminate pathways, create a focal point, provide safety lighting for steps, or light up a back gate for easy access? Here are some common types of outdoor solar lights:

  • Path Lights: These lights are perfect for illuminating sidewalks and driveways. They are inserted into the ground and typically have a solar panel on top.
  • Spotlights: Spotlights create a focused beam of light and are ideal for security or guidance purposes. They can be mounted on walls or inserted into the ground.
  • Post Lights: Post lights function similarly to path lights but are fixed to a yard post instead of being inserted in the ground.
  • Wall-Mounted Lights: These lights can come in various forms, such as lanterns or flood lights, and are mounted on walls or fences to provide perimeter illumination.
  • String Lights: String lights are popular for their decorative design. They can be used on a patio or porch to create a warm and inviting ambiance.

Brightness

The brightness of outdoor solar lights is measured in lumens, with a higher number indicating brighter light. For ambient lighting, a range of five to 100 lumens is recommended. Security lights, such as spotlights and floodlights, usually have higher lumen outputs. Some solar lights offer multiple brightness settings for different purposes.

Weather Resistance

In outdoor solar lights, the IP (Ingress Protection) rating measures how waterproof and weather-resistant the lights are. Look for an IP65 rating, with the first number indicating its resistance to dust and debris (six being the highest) and the second number indicating its airtightness. Higher levels of airtightness provide better protection against water, including angled spray and submersion.

Special Features

Consider any special features that may be important to you. Some outdoor solar lights can be controlled from your phone if they are WiFi-enabled. Others offer color-changing or pattern options, which can be fun for holidays or parties.

Our Testing Process

We rigorously tested 27 outdoor solar lights in our lab in Des Moines, Iowa. We assessed their setup process, features, design, brightness, durability, and overall value. Our team subjected the lights to various conditions, including exposure to water, impact tests, and extreme temperatures. We also measured their performance from dusk to dawn. Based on these evaluations, we compiled a list of the best outdoor solar lights.

More Solar Lights to Consider

Linkind Outdoor Solar Motion Sensor Landscape Spotlights: This motion-sensing option is more affordable and offers different modes. However, it had a shorter operating time of 4 hours and 9 minutes in our testing.

Frontgate Pro Series VI Solar Path Lights: These path lights have an attractive design and provide 60 lumens of light. However, they only lasted 3 hours and 20 minutes on a full charge.
