How to Easily Embellish Glass Objects

Using tissue paper, ribbon, or glitter to create a textured effect on a glass vase is a quick and easy way to add a personal touch to your space.

  1. 1

To give the vase some visual texture, try covering it in tissue paper. Cut out shapes from colored tissue paper that you've chosen. First, using the craft foam brush, cover the vase in mod podge. Then, arrange the tissue paper shapes on the vase so that they adhere to the adhesive. Apply a final coat of mod podge to the vase to keep the tissue paper in place. [1]

    • Make a mosaic design on the vase by taping squares of colored tissue paper, say, green, blue, and purple.
    • Make a polka-dotted vase by randomly adhering tissue paper circles of varying sizes and colors.
  2. 2

Just wrap some ribbon or twine around the vase, and you have a quick and easy decoration. Choose a ribbon that fits your needs in terms of color and thickness. Wrap the vase in a bow, or make a cut in the ribbon so that it is just long enough to go around the vase and glue it in place. Wrap the vase in multiple layers of twine and secure with a bow. [2]

    • Wrap the vase in a wide gold ribbon, or cut several lengths of white, yellow, and orange ribbon and glue them in parallel lines around the vase.

  3. 3

Throw some glitter on the vase and watch it shine. Either cover the entire vase with clear craft glue or mask off a section of the vase with painter's tape before gluing. Using the foam brush, evenly spread the glue across the surface, and then sprinkle the glitter on top. Excess glitter can be removed by gently shaking the vase. [3]

    • Spread silver glitter over the entire surface of a vase, or use painter's tape to divide it in half vertically, then sprinkle glitter over the lower half.
    • If you want to make a more elaborate design on the vase, you should use glue to make a pattern before you sprinkle the glitter on top.
  4. 4

Place a piece of adhesive paper on the vase for a quick template. Sticker sheets of decorative paper, available at art supply stores and online, can be easily applied to a vase. Remove the adhesive backing from the paper, cut out the desired shapes, and adhere them to the vase. [4]

    • You can decorate your vase by, for instance, sticking adhesive paper flowers or leaves to it.
    • Make a striped pattern on your vase by adhering paper cut into thin strips.
  5. 5

Lace is a delicate material and would look great decorating the vase. Using the craft foam brush, apply a layer of mod podge to the vase. Lay the lace over the vase and press firmly to help the mod podge set. A final coat of mod podge can be applied over the lace. [5]

    • In a pinch, you can also use doilies.
    • You might want to spray the vase with a sealant that isn't quite as obvious as the mod podge.

Glass vases can be painted with a stenciled design. To decorate your vase, select a stencil that you like and plan to use. This can be a floral pattern or a stencil of an object like a butterfly, feather, or tree. Use a flat foam brush to dab paint onto the stencil while holding the stencil flat against the vase. Carefully remove the stencil from the vase to reveal the design you've created by covering the areas you don't want on the vase. [6]

    • If you're worried about the stencil moving while painting, secure it to the vase with painter's tape.
    • Use a rose stencil and red paint to make a flower, or use a patterned stencil and white paint to make a design that covers an entire vase.
  2. 2

Tape off sections of the vase and paint them to make geometric designs. To prevent paint from seeping under the tape when applied to the vase, cut off strips of painter's tape and firmly adhere them to the surface. Create a geometric pattern on the taped-off vase by applying a different color of acrylic paint to each section. [7]

    • If you want more subtle separations between colors, you'll need to cut the painter's tape into narrower strips.
    • Once the paint has started to dry, you can remove the tape.
  3. 3

Painting the vase with chalkboard paint transforms it into a chalkboard. Get some chalkboard paint from an arts and crafts store or a discount warehouse. You can either cover the entire vase in chalkboard paint, use painter's tape to divide it into sections, or freehand paint a design onto it. [8]

    • Write on the vase with chalkboard paint using a craft foam brush.
    • If you want the chalkboard paint to be thick enough to write on, you may need to apply multiple coats.
  4. 4

You can give the vase a stylish appearance by painting it in an ombre pattern. You should start by painting the very bottom of the vase with your chosen darkest color. To create the bottom ring on the vase, mix some white into the dark paint and apply it there. To create an ombre effect on the vase, continue tinting the color lighter and adding another ring. [9]

    • A vase you're working on might have a navy blue base, followed by a succession of blues including royal, sky, and light.
  5. 5

One option is to freehand paint designs onto the vase. Use a tiny paintbrush and acrylic paint, or glass-specific paint markers, for this. Make a decision as to the type of pattern you'd like to paint on your vase. This could be anything from flowers to geometric shapes to elaborate linework. Take your time and paint carefully to avoid bloopers. [10]

    • Using paint pens, decorate the exterior of the vase with tulips; using a paintbrush and green, yellow, and orange paint, decorate the vase with leaves.

Collect some shells to put in the vase. Use shells you found on a recent trip to the beach, or buy them from a hobby shop or an art supply website. Slowly and carefully stack the shells in the vase until they reach the desired height. [11]

    • Select a quantity of shells adequate to fill the receptacle, if that is your intention.
    • Layer sand at the bottom of the vase to create a cushion for your flowers.
  2. 2

Use the vase as a picture frame by inserting photos into it. If your glass vase has a large enough opening, this will work perfectly. Carefully insert the photograph into the vase so that the viewed side of the image is exposed. The photo just needs a little bending to rest against the vase's curve. [12]

    • You can use a short, wide vase to display a black and white 4 in 6 in (10 cm 15 cm) photograph, or you can stack several colored photographs in a tall vase.
  3. 3

Make a terrarium out of the vase by placing soil and plants inside. Fill the bottom of the vase with soil; if the vase is tall, use more soil. To use the vase as a planter, fill it with soil and plant a few small succulents, either real or fake. [13]

    • It's ideal for vase widths of three feet or more.
    • Put the vase in direct sunlight, and water it occasionally if you're using real plants.
  4. 4

When making a flower arrangement, fill the vase with big leaves and blooms. Fill your vase with real leaves and flowers, artificial plants from a craft store, or a combination of the two! Arrange the leaves in the vase so that the glossy side is showing, and place the flowers so that the petals can be seen. [14]

    • Put some fake daisies in the vase or some big leaves from a plant you have in your garden.
  5. 5

Fill the vase with patterned stones or sea glass. Use blue sea glass to fill a glass vase one-fourth of the way, or stack different colored stones to make a design. The stones should be poured into the vase and evenly distributed using the hands. [15]

    • Colored stones and sea glass can be found at most any craft store or big box retailer.
    • Don't worry if you can't get to the stones in the vase; just give it a gentle shake to spread them out.
    • You could, for instance, fill the vase to the top with sea glass in varying shades of pink, orange, and yellow.
  6. 6

As a speedy ornament, stack grapevine balls in a transparent container. Select a large number of smaller grapevine balls to fill the vase, or go with just a few medium-sized ones. Fill the vase with the grapevine balls and stack them on top of each other to make a quick and easy centerpiece. [16]

    • You could use lights strung through the grapevine balls to illuminate the vase, or you could alter their color by spray painting them.
